The Fundacio la Caixa is located in one of the most significant buildings
of the city, which was formerly the Gran Hotel. The Fundacio la Caixa
took over this modernist building in 1993 and has turned it into an
architectural beauty and furthermore with a first class programme of
cultural and art events.
The Gran Hotel is the founding father of Mallorcan hotels. The building
was designed by the Catalan architect Luis Domene Muntaner and is the
first important example of modernism on the island. It was built between
1901 and 1903, has 5 floors with the facades intricately decorated,
especially at the open areas, with sculpture formed by the combination
of human, animal and vegetable themes.
The Caja de Pensiones of Barcelona carefully restored this building,
which was opened in July 1993 and it is now the headquarters of the
Fundacion la Caixa. It houses various temporary exhibition halls, a
library specializing in contemporary art and the Anglada Camarasa collection,
which consists of 79 oil paintings and 125 sketches from this Catalan
painter who resided in the Pollensa area. There is also a cafe-restaurant
with large windows that offer a view of Palma life.
Within these walls there have been exhibits of work
from Rembrandt and sculptures of Rodin. Programming is done in conjunction
with their offices in Barcelona, and this place offers both residents
and visitors the chance to see works of art that it would normally be
very difficult to find on the island.
