Mallorca (This Page)

Mallorca 12 -19 October 2012

  • My main objective, bird wise, was to try to find Balearic Warbler, which was a lifer for me. Though I anticipated that it could be difficult to find the species in October, this turned out not to be the case...Henk Hendricks reports.

Majorca 10th September-21st September 2009

  • You can never get tired of Majorca, its rich and varied habitats offer the chance to see many species of birds. For the second year running we returned travelling in the Autumn, a little earlier this year...Derek Lister reports.

Mallorca 27th September -October 4th 2008

  • The viewpoint to the Sa Colabra part of the coast on the main Sollar-Pollencia road proved very rewarding. As the temperature rose, so appeared the raptors, Black Vultures soared constantly, with five in the air at once, they were joined by three Eleonora’s Falcons, and Booted Eagle...Derek Lister reports.

Mallorca & Islas Cólumbrétes, 2-16 July 2008

  • This was basically a family-holiday, with limited birdwatching. My aim was not to amass as many species as possible, but to concentrate on a few endemic (sub)species, especially Balearic Warbler, balearica Crossbill and balearica Spotted Flycatcher, both potential splits...E.J. Alblas reports.

Magical Majorca April 29th-May 6th 2008

  • 13 birders from Burbage Bird Club in Leicestershire stayed in Puerto Pollensa at the Pollensa Park Hotel for 7 nights. The weather was sunny and warm throughout. The roads were quiet the hotel superb and the birding excellent...Ken Reeves reports.

Mallorca 25 May-1 June 2007

  • Due to having to go in half term this trip to Mallorca was outside the peak spring passage time.  Details of the species likely to be of interest to British birders are included, in total 80 species were logged....Stephen Dunstan reports.

Majorca 23rd to 30th April 2005

  • We headed for an afternoon visit to the Albufera.  In five hours birding this site we saw 60 species, highlights being introduced Red Knobbed Coot and Purple Swamp Hen, a brief Little Bittern, pair of Slender Billed Gulls and two Whiskered Terns.  An array of Herons, Egrets and Waders were also seen....Andy Firth reports

Mallorca 14-21st May 2004

  • This was our first trip to Mallorca and found it to be a really very stimulating place, the bird variety is very good and the scenery spectacular. We booked through First Choice, a relatively short flight of 4 hours, the transfer through the airport and on to the coach was very efficient and the time from airport to hotel was about 1 hour.....Robin Hadley reports

Mallorca September 2003

  • Our main target were three species that would be new to both of us: Eleonora's Falcon, Marmora's Warbler and Moustached Warbler. We succeeded in finding all these birds. Furthermore, in just 2 and a half days, we managed to get 78 species, which was well above expectations....Gonçalo Elias reports.

Mallorca ~ the quiet side April 2003

  • On our first field day we visit the Albufera wetlands. En route, early birds include smart Red-crested Pochard and Audouin's Gull with a very handsome Woodchat Shrike, perching for all to admire in the scope. At the entrance to the Albufera reserve, we pause at the heronry to compare Little and Cattle Egrets, resplendent in elegant breeding plumes...Christopher Hall reports

Mallorca 5-11th September 2002

  • The top birding site in Mallorca, according to the books. It should be renamed Coot City. The first visit produced hundreds of Coots and a few herons -  Grey, Purple and Squacco. Egret - Cattle, Little and Great White, and Purple Gallinule all seen from the CIM Hide...John Kirby reports

Mallorca 27th April to 4th May 2001

  • As most of the best birding sites are located in the north of the Island, it makes sense to be based in either Pt. Pollenca or Alcudia in the north. This allows all of the sites to be easily visited with minimal driving. When staying in one of the above mentioned towns, the Boquer Valley, Albufereta and S'Albufera can all be visited either on foot, by bike or public transport, if you do not wish to hire a car for the full duration of the trip...Morten Bentzon Hansen reports

Mallorca (North) May 2000 Trip Report

  • A two week family holiday in Northern Mallorca between May 11th and 25th 2000. We were based in a villa 1km west of Pollenca booked through OSL in the UK. Although a family holiday, the proximity of excellent birding sites enabled me to undertake a considerable amount of birding. A car was hired for the full two weeks but only sites in the North and West were birded...Wilton Farrelly reports

Recommended Travel Books for the Balearics:

The Rough Guide to Mallorca
Phil Lee: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • This Rough Guide contains some useful information for the visiting birder: There is a chapter on Flora and Fauna with special reference to the key birds. Access details for S'Albufera, walks in the Boquer Valley and Black Vultures at the Cuber Reservoir, its all here. Rough guides have never failed me before and I wasn't disappointed with this one. Quite well researched and put together in a logical manner. I Would recommend it to any one planning to visit Mallorca.

The Rough Guide to Ibiza and Formentera
Iain Stewart, Martin Davies: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Dotted around Ibiza’s dazzling shoreline are more than fifty beaches, which range from expansive sweeps of sand to exquisite, miniature coves nestling beneath soaring cliffs. Many of the best beaches were insensitively transformed into functional holiday resorts in the 1960s, but plenty of pristine places remain if you’re inquisitive enough to seek them out. Ibiza’s hilly, thickly wooded interior is equally beguiling, the countryside peppered with isolated whitewashed villages and terraced fields of almonds, figs and olives.

The Mini Rough Guide to Menorca
Phil Lee: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • The pocket sized "Rough Guide to Menorca" is written by Phil Lee a writer and traveler who most definitely knows this island "inside out". It is a comprehensive guide that explores every corner of Menorca. Essential information is provided for every new traveler to this rather impressive haven, full of fantastic beaches, beautiful sunsets and basically a wonderful way of life.
