Travel Insurance

You are strongly advised to take out travel insurance before embarking on any holiday. Most tour operators will insist that you are covered before accepting a booking.

View the guide to Holiday Insurance  produced by the Association of British Insurers .

However you do not have to take the insurance offered by the travel company. It pays to shop around first.

A travel company may charge as much as £40 per adult for a single trip whereas you can purchase an Annual travel policy covering several trips for the whole family from £50 upwards - but do compare the cover offered by different policies. Some budget versions exclude luggage, for example. Remember that travel insurance covers you for cancellation as well as medical expenses, lost baggage etc. and therefore an annual policy can be used cover you for short breaks in the UK as well.

The companies below all offer online quotations and purchase for single trip and annual travel policies. Check them out!

You should also make sure that you have a  European Health Insurance Card . See also  Information on Getting Treatment in Spain and the Islands . As they state "It is essential to establish that the medical practitioner you consult works within the Spanish State Health Service. Treatment under the EHIC arrangements is only provided by practitioners within the Spanish State Health Service, and in some parts of the country, particularly the outlying islands , you may have to travel some distance to attend a surgery ( consultorio ), health centre ( centro sanitaro ) or hospital clinic ( ambulatorio ) operating within the health service."

Therefore private travel insurance is advisable.
